HISTORY OF THE HICKORY HILL COMMUNITY

Hickory Hill is a special community created by a group of World War II specialists and Columbia University alumni who had been stationed in Tappan with their young families and were determined to remain in the area they had grown to love. Two of these original founders were Betty and Paul Melone, who helped to create the Hickory Hill One Community and later the Hickory Hill Two condominiums. They were the owners of this offering.

In 1950, on the site of the old "McGuillicuddy Farm", the founders strove together to preserve the natural environment of 31 acres of hills, woodlands, fields and orchards as a heritage to be shared by one and all.

Numerous articles have been written through the years about the innovative cooperative activities and neighborly spirit of Hickory Hill and the effects its members have had upon the preservation of the historic treasures in the community.

An article in Popular Mechanics Magazine in 1952 was titled, "How to Help Build a House", and another article was written about the community in Redbook Magazine in Feburary 1956.

The adjoining Hickory Hill Lane adult town homes were built in 1983 by a group of Hickory Hill members with the vision of creating attractive, easy-maintenance homes for members whose children had moved away and wished to remain in the area when their housing needs diminished.

Recently the community was featured in the New York Times because it has attracted the "young" as well as "the young at heart"- writers, artists, actors, physicians, educators and others who value the rich quality of life the community affords its members.
